Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Reading Poetry But Were Afraid to Ask
Reading poetry can be challenging. This six-session workshop will explore the various ways to approach a poem for enjoyment and meaning. Selections from American and British poets will be read aloud, explored, and discussed. Elements including the following will be the focus: identifying the speaker and situation of a poem; noticing the diction of a poem; paying attention to sense imagery; understanding figures of speech; deciding what is a symbol; looking for allusion; recognizing irony; recognizing the effects of syntax and structure; appreciating rhythm, meter, and sound effects.
