ARTZ Philly

December 12, 2017

I recently had the pleasure of meeting with Susan Shifrin, PhD, Founder and Executive Director of ARTZ Philadelphia. Susan is a passionate spokesperson for ARTZ Philly, and the time flew by as I heard about Susan’s approach and ARTZ programming for people living with dementia.

ARTZ is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that was founded on the belief that people living with dementia should be accorded the benefits of well-being and quality of life that others enjoy. They offer opportunities for interactions around arts and culture that turn this belief into reality. ARTZ is committed to supporting and celebrating people with dementia and their care partners as valued members of our wider creative community. (Visit ARTZ Philadelphia’s new website to learn more about programs.)

I have since attended an ARTZ at the Museum workshop at the Woodmere Art Museum, and joined their mission in action.

Susan explained to me when we first met that we need to see beyond the dementia diagnosis. Often, caregivers lose experiencing their loved ones in the present, and see them as their diagnosis, rather than accepting, interacting with, and loving the person where they are today.

ARTZ at the Museum is a great format for senior adults living with dementia and their caregivers to participate fully and equally in art appreciation sessions.

I look forward to attending future sessions, and learning more about ARTZ Philadelphia’s programs. Thank you ♥ to Susan Shifrin and all the people involved with ARTZ Philly.
